Teacher deregistered for sex with pupil

A teacher who had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old pupil over a long period has been deregistered.

The married man had sex with the girl for about 18 months during school hours and overnight, the Teachers Council disciplinary tribunal said.

The girl, in an affidavit in February, told the council the relationship began at a school camp in February 2007, Fairfax Media reported.

They later exchanged texts after which the teacher suggested they go away for a night together.

On March 4, they had sex and spent the night together in a vacant house where the teacher also offered her alcohol.

The girl left school in 2007 but they continued seeing each other until mid-2008.

When their relationship broke down, the girl complained to the school principal.

The council deregistered the teacher and ordered him to pay half of the council's hearing costs.
