Calendar Girls
JENNIFER Ellison and Jean Boht have signed up for cheeky comedy Calendar Girls which is coming to the Empire.
The Liverpool actresses will be bearing all with strategically-placed props of course in the poignant comedy-drama when it arrives at the Lime Street theatre in September.
Ruth Madoc and Denise Black are also among the cast, while Liverpool’s Joe McGann plays the role of John and ex-Coronation Street star Bruno Langley is Lawrence the photographer.
Calendar Girls was penned as a smash-hit film by Wirral-born stage and screen writer Tim Firth.
It is based on the true story of the Yorkshire WI branch, who decided to raise money for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research after the husband of one of their members was struck down by the illness.
Their solution was a WI calendar with a difference all the women posed nude.
They initially aimed to generate funds to buy a new sofa for the hospital where John Baker was being treated.
Instead they sparked a global phenomenon and to date they have raised more than £1.5m for the charity.
The 2003 film version of Calendar Girls starred Julie Walters, Helen Mirren and Celia Imrie.
Previous cast members of the stage version, which has enjoyed a sell-out run in the West End, include Lynda Bellingham, Patricia Hodge and Gaynor Faye.
Now the play is set to come to the Liverpool Empire for a week-long stay.
Empire general manager Hannah Ashdown said today: "We are delighted the Calendar Girls tour will be stopping off at the Empire. With such a fantastic cast, I am sure it will be a great success in Liverpool."
Calendar Girls comes to the Empire from September 27 to October 2.
