A 33-year-old man dubbed the Facebook killer jailed for life today after admitting the kidnap, rape and murder of a teenager he met on Facebook. He was previously convicted of sex offences and had groomed his victim through a web of lies and deceit while pretending to be a student.
Facebook Killer Jailed
Peter Chapman has been sentenced to a minimum of 35 years in prison by Judge Peter Fox, the Recorder of Middlesbrough. The body of Ashleigh Hall who worked as a childcare student was found dumped in a field near Sedgefield, County Durham in October of 2009
It was ascertained that Miss Hall, hailing from Darlington had been strangled to death after a vicious rape and kidnap episode. The prosecution told Tesside Crown Court that Champman had created a fictitious 19 year old persona of Peter Cartwright. He become Ashleigh’s friend on the site and began chatting and ultimately meeting her on the evening of October 25th.
He even went as far to convince the girl that Peter’s father would pick her up, giving him the perfect lie to get Ashleigh into his car knowing that a 33 year old man being there wouldn’t have added up.
It was to be a tragic end to such a young life and will make calls for greater internet security and awareness to be ramped up in light of this terrible incident. With the Facebook killer jailed behind bars for life, the family are left to consider the sentence.
