Cleveland: Former Independence jailer sentenced to 10 years for sex offenses

CLEVELAND -- Ronald Corrao Jr., a former Independence City Jail employee, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually assaulting a boy, 15; soliciting boys 15 to 17 for sexual images of themselves via cell phone; and providing alcohol and drugs to these same boys.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason said Corrao worked as a jailer in Independence.

The investigation was referred by the Independence Police Department to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

Between June, 2006 and December, 2008, Corrao, 25, of Independence, befriended and enticed four boys, ages 15 to 17, to his home on many occasions and provided them with marijuana.

During this time period, he solicited and received photos to his cell phone from four boys who were nude and performing sex acts on themselves.

He also solicited and received a video to his cell phone of one of the boys performing a sex act on himself. On one occasion at his home, he performed a sex act on a 15-year-old boy, who was impaired from the use of marijuana provided by Corrao, the prosecutor's office said.

Additionally, he sent photos to another boy's cell phone of the other boys nude, as well as a video of one of the boys performing a sex act.

Five of the boys live in Independence and one lives in Newburgh Heights.

After the Independence Police Department learned of the allegations, Corrao's employment as a jailer was terminated.

A search warrant was executed at his home on January 31, 2009.

His computer and cell phone were seized. Corrao was suspended from his position on that same day, and was terminated in May, 2009.

ICAC detectives conducted a forensic examination on his computer and cell phone and found child pornography on both items.

In addition to the recovered images of the boys, the child pornography also consisted of 4 images and 4 videos, including an image of a nude boy in the shower and three separate images of nude boys performing sex acts on themselves.

The four pornographic videos found were: a video of a boy performing a sex act on himself, a video of a girl and boy performing a sex act, a video of two boys engaged in oral sex, and a video of two boys engaged in anal intercourse.

The child pornography was sent to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which identified children in one of the videos as known sexually abused victims.

On April 1, 2010, Corrao pleaded guilty to 26 counts: 7 counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor; 16 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity oriented material; 1 count of sexual battery;1 count of corrupting another with drugs; and 1 count of possessing criminal tools.

Corrao is now labeled as a Tier II Sexual Offender.
