A medical student who was cleared of rape told yesterday of his nightmare at being falsely accused.
A jury took just 45 minutes to throw out the case against Olumide Fadayomi after hearing his accuser had made similar allegations about another man - who later killed himself.
Mr Fadayomi, 27, claimed the sex was consensual and he too thought of suicide.
Judge Patrick Robertshaw slammed the Crown Prosecution Service, saying the case should never have come before a jury.
After telling Sheffield crown court about the suicide 18 months earlier, Judge Robertshaw said: "There was a previous allegation by this complainant, who enjoys the full benefit of anonymity."
That case had never reached court because it 'was lacking in credibility' but the judge revealed: "The young man, when facing the allegation, committed suicide."
He added: "The evidence did not, and was never going to, prove rape."
After being cleared Mr Fadayomi said: "My life has been hell for the last seven months. Friends shunned me and my parents were heartbroken. I thought about taking my own life."
Mr Fadayomi, a medical student from Nigeria, met the 21-year-old girl in a club and took her home. They ended up in his bedroom and afterwards she hugged him and left. Hours later he was arrested.
Naheed Hussain, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS South Yorkshire said: "We were satisfied there was sufficient evidence for the case to go to court."
