Imam supports sex education in mosques to protect children from abuse

SHAYKH Hassan Rabbani insists discussions about sex within Islamic and Muslim societies is sensitive but something must be done.

Shaykh Hassan Rabbani
Shaykh Hassan Rabbani A LEADING Islamic scholar has called for sex education in Scotland’s mosques.
Shaykh Hassan Rabbani, an Imam, said ignorance in ethnic communities was leaving children open to abuse.
He added: “It would be a very good idea for mosques to introduce Islamic sex education where we can teach the children to respond to sexual situations.
“The children don’t really understand and that leaves them easier to exploit.”
Shaykh Rabbani is designing a faith-sensitive syllabus with Scottish charity Roshni, who have spent 10 years tackling all types of abuse, including the sexual exploitation of children, in ethnic minority communities.
He said: “The topic of sex within Islamic and Muslim societies is very sensitive and parents are very shy to bring it up with their children.
“We need a syllabus which is culturally sensitive. We want it to be designed so that people won’t be offended but at the same time we will get our message across and be able to educate the children.”
